Erta Ale (also spelled Ertale) is a continuously active basaltic shield volcano located in the Afar Region of northeastern Ethiopia. Sitting within the hyper-arid Danakil Depression, it stands at an elevation of 613 meters (2,011 ft) and holds the distinction of being the most active volcano in Ethiopia.

Its name translates to "Smoking Mountain" in the native Afar language. The volcano is internationally famous for hosting one of the world's few persistent lava lakes, which has remained consistently active since it was first recorded in 1906. Because the magma currents keep the lava liquid, its surface constantly morphs—forming a shifting, dark charcoal crust split open by glowing red fissures of searing liquid magma.

Key Geographical & Geological Features

  • The Danakil Depression: Erta Ale resides in a harsh desert basin that drops below sea level on the border between Ethiopia and Eritrea. It is considered one of the hottest and most hostile environments on Earth.

  • The Afar Triangle: The volcano sits at a unique triple junction where the Earth's crust is actively ripping apart. This tectonic movement involves the splitting of the Somalian micro-plate from the rest of the African continent, a process that is slowly creating a brand-new oceanic crust.

  • Summit Caldera: The gently sloping shield structure culminates in a massive 1,700 x 600-meter oval caldera. This area features complex pit craters that periodically shift, fill with lava, overflow, or split into separate active lava pools.

Visiting Erta Ale

Despite the grueling climate—where daytime temperatures routinely exceed 45°C (113°F)—the volcano is a bucket-list destination for scientists and adventure travelers.

The Trek: Due to extreme daytime heat, tour groups typically make the ascent up the gentle slopes in the evening. Visitors often sleep on the crater rim under the stars, watching the dramatic glow of the churning lava at night.

Safety Protocols: Traveling to Erta Ale requires careful logistical planning, including secured regional permits and mandatory armed escorts due to its highly remote location and proximity to sensitive border zones.
